I seem to have developed a love for stories that involve exploring nature. Wild by Cheryl Strayed is the first book on this journey and what a way to start.
Finding a good creative non-fiction book can be quite difficult although there are many amazing books out there. One that comes to mind is H is for Hawk by Helen MacDonald, the amazing tale of grief and training a goss hawk.
So what is Wild about?
At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life.
With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State — and she would do it alone.
Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.
Again this is one I listened to through Audible. Firstly I need to say how much this story touched me. Her honesty and courage in both taking this journey and then sharing it with the world is something I look up to. There are no details spared in this bare all memoir, from drug use to abortions, Cheryl shares everything.
The story doesn’t just share her journey as she treks along the Pacific Crest Trail, she talks about her mother’s illness, her family life and everything that has led up to her making the decision of trekking alone with no experience.
The way Cheryl writes her story has you feeling as though you are on her shoulder as she walks alone through the beautiful yet dangerous trails from the Mojave Desert all the way to Washington State.
Would I do it? Yes.
Will I do something similar? Hopefully.
