Now you may be wondering what disadvantages there could possibly be to living a rural lifestyle, and I would have agreed until recently.
I love the fact that we can take the kids for a walk down the road and wander off into the woods collecting wild fruit, seeing the array of wildlife and also as we are near a farm, being able to see the spring lambs grow.
But now I have a near-teenager, the disadvantages of this type of lifestyle are really becoming evident, especially since he started high school. I hadn’t realised that as we have to drive everywhere, even to the local shop, my eldest had never really done anything on his own. Never bought anything in a shop, never ordered anything in a cafe etc. All thanks to my ignorance and rural living.
So over the summer holiday’s I am trying to teach him and my little two some life skills so the jump won’t be as big for them and so my eldest feels more confident and independent. We are going to be learning some basic cooking skills, letting them all go into the shop and buy things on their own and many more.
Are there any other life skills you feel children need to have, I’d love to hear your views.
